UF Weight Management Lab


The UF Weight Management Lab is headed by Michael G. Perri, Ph.D., ABPP. Dr. Perri is a Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology and Dean of the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions.

Dr. Perri is currently the Principal Investigator for the NHLBI-funded Rural LITE study, which is focused on the long-term management of obesity in women from rural communities. He is also Co-PI for the NIDDK-supported STORY trial ("Sensible Treatment of Obesity in Rural Youth"), which is evaluating family-based behavioral treatments for childhood obesity.

Dr. Perri has served as principal investigator or co-investigator for more than $30 million in research grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs and private industry. He has contributed to more than 120 scientific publications including peer-reviewed articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Archives of Internal Medicine, Diabetes Care, Health Psychology, the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and Behavior Therapy. His program of empirical studies testing behavioral methods to improve the long-term management of obesity has contributed significantly to what has become the standard of care in lifestyle interventions for weight management. In 2008 Perri received the American Psychological Association's Samuel M. Turner Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Research in Clinical Psychology.

Dr. Perri is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Obesity Society. He was recently appointed associate editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, the leading peer-reviewed journal in the field of clinical psychology. Perri earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Before arriving at UF he served on the faculty at the University of Rochester, Indiana University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Perri has served on the editorial boards of numerous behavioral science journals including Health Psychology, Eating Behaviors, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, and Behavior Therapist. In addition, Dr. Perri has served on scientific review panels for the Institute of Medicine, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the U.S. Surgeon General's Office, and the American College of Sports Medicine.
